Description
This is a house, formerly the Red Lion Inn, dating from the 18th century, with alterations and extensions around the middle of the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with some ashlar window dressings, and has slate roofs with gabled ends and red brick gable-end stacks.
The original plan was for a two-room house, possibly with an outshut at the back. This was enlarged in the mid-19th century through the addition of a storey, the raising of the rear outshut and its roof to two storeys, and the construction of a two-storey extension on the east side.
The south front is symmetrical, with three windows. It has sash windows with 30 small panes to the ground and first floors, set within ashlar surrounds. The second floor has cast-iron windows with glazing bars and a central opening light. A central doorway has a six-panel door (with glazed panels) and a cantilevered canopy. The two-storey extension to the east has similar cast-iron windows and a larger window over the doorway. The rear outshut is two stories high, with a lean-to roof and cast-iron windows and casements.
The ground floor of the original house is now one room, featuring a large fireplace at the west end with a chamfered timber lintel and a limestone flag floor. It also has chamfered ceiling beams. Other 18th-century joinery includes two-panel doors. The 19th-century roof features a king-post with high collars and tenoned purlins. A deep cellar lies beneath the right-hand end of the original range, and contains a chamfered ceiling beam.
