Description

Holly Cottage is a house built in 1729, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with squared quoins and some wooden lintels, topped with a concrete plain-tile roof and brick gable stacks. The house has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high, plus an attic. The symmetrical front features three windows with 2-light casements that are taller on the first floor, all having chamfered lintels. There is a central doorway with an ashlar flat arch, which contains a reset 16th or early 17th century ogee-moulded door frame with elaborate chamfer stops. Above the door, there is a stone plaque inscribed with "S/TM/1729". Inside, above the fireplace, is a fine reset 16th century Tudor-arched bressumer with recessed spandrels. The re-used features are believed to have originated from Middle Aston House.
