Description

Cedar Lodge is a substantial house that was possibly originally built in the mid-18th century, remodeled in the late 18th century, and extended in the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone and marlstone rubble, featuring some wooden lintels, and has roofs made of Stonesfield slate and Welsh slate with brick stacks. The house has a double-depth plan with service ranges and stands two storeys plus an attic high.

The entrance front displays a symmetrical arrangement of 16-pane sash windows with brick jambs and wooden lintels, along with a central six-panel door framed by marlstone jambs. Above the door is a late 18th-century flat canopy with a panelled soffit and shaped brackets. To the extreme right, there is a rubble projection that likely contains a stair and has a similar window. The garden front, which is stuccoed over limestone rubble, also features a symmetrical three-window layout and a more elaborate entrance canopy with dentil decoration below a round window. The outer bays have architraved tripartite sashes. The roof has two unequal spans with end stacks in both sections.

A late 18th-century or early 19th-century hipped-roofed range, covered in Welsh slate, runs at right angles to the main house. This range has a three-window front with leaded two-light casements on the first floor, and the lower windows have ornamental cast-iron grilles flanking the six-panel door. This range has been connected to the right end of the main range by a 19th-century marlstone linking section, which was altered in the 20th century.

Inside, there are some late 18th-century panelled doors and shutters. Cedar Lodge was the home of the novelist Iris Murdoch for many years.
