Description
West End Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1700, with extensions added in the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and coursed rubble, featuring some wooden lintels, and has an old plain-tile roof with rebuilt brick stacks. The building has a three-unit plan with an end outshut, extending to an L shape, and stands two storeys plus an attic.
The symmetrical front has five windows made of ashlar, with rusticated quoins, a plinth, and a storey band. The central three bays project forward under a tall parapetted gable that contains an oculus. The projecting kneelers return as a stone cornice over the wide flanking bays. The central doorway features a panelled door with a wide plain architrave and a double-stepped keyblock, topped by a flat canopy on shaped brackets. The window above the door is blind. All windows are of two lights, with ovolo-moulded surrounds and central mullions on the first floor. The end gables also have similar attic windows. To the right, there is a rubble outshut that is roughly contemporary with the main structure. The rear of the farmhouse has a large stone lateral stack with many offsets and features stop-chamfered lintels. A rear wing, which returns on the right, has been shortened.
Inside, there is a winder stair on the first floor, some plank doors with a wooden latch, and a butt-purlin roof supported by heavy rafters. Many of the roof timbers and some window mouldings show signs of being made from re-used materials.
