Description

MERTON SP51NE 3/98 Astley Bridge Farmhouse 26/11/51 (Formerly listed as Astley Bridge Farmhouse and outbuilding) - II Farmhouse. Mid C18. Limestone rubble with squared dressings and some brick ornament; concrete plain-tile roof with brick ridge stack. Central-stair plan with rear outshut. Mid-Georgian style. 2 storeys plus attic. Symmetrical 3-window front of main range breaks forward in the centre below a pediment-shaped gable which contains a brick-arched lunette; the centre bay also has a Venetian window above a similar arrangement incorporating the front door, both with brick relieving arches. Outer bays have 16-pane sashes above 20-pane sashes. A brick cornice with moulded dentils breaks around the centre bay and returns to the sides. Hipped roof extends over rear outshut. Lower slated granary range to right is now incorporated into the house but retains an external brick stair to rear. Rear wing returning on left was formerly a dairy.
