Description
The Friars is a house dating from 1685, built from ironstone ashlar with a renewed 20th-century tile roof. It features a stone and brick end stack and has a two-unit plan across two storeys. The façade has a three-window range, with a central entrance that includes a moulded square head, a plank and rail door, and a hood mould with a diamond-shaped label stop. Above the entrance is a small oval window in a stone frame, along with the datestone. The entrance is flanked by two 4-light stone mullioned windows, each with hood moulds and label stops, and there are three similar 3-light windows on the first floor. Inside, there is an interesting oak post and panel partition at the top of the stairs and a fine large stone fireplace in the bedroom above the hall. The initials and datestone may refer to William and Martha Plant. The interior has not been inspected.
