Description

Manor Farmhouse, now a house, dates from 1685, with later 18th-century extensions and 20th-century alterations. A datestone inscribed "H/T/M 1685" identifies Thomas Hall or Hitchman. The farmhouse is constructed of ironstone ashlar, with steeply pitched imitation stone slate roofs and brick end stacks. It follows a two-unit plan, expanded by an 18th-century wing to form an L-shaped layout. The front elevation, facing the road, has two storeys plus an attic, and a three-window range. The entrance, on the right side, features a plank door within a moulded, square-headed doorway with an open segmental pediment. The ground floor has two casement windows with wooden lintels. The first floor has a single-light metal casement window, a seven-light metal casement window, and a two-light stone mullioned window with a hood mould and label stop. The attic has a similar stone mullioned window. A staircase projection is visible at the rear. Originally, the interior comprised a hall and parlour, with a cellar beneath, later extended by the addition of a pantry and kitchen wing. The detailing is of a notably superior architectural quality compared to larger, contemporary farmhouses. The interior remains uninspected.
