Description
Spittal’s Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse, likely dating from around 1680, with a single-storey addition on the left, dated W.J/1797, possibly for William Jeffs. The main part of the farmhouse is constructed of squared coursed ironstone, with a steeply pitched but lowered slate roof. Brick end and ridge stacks are present, the ridge stack sitting on a chamfered stone base. The plan is of two units, plus the extension. It is two storeys high with a two-window front. A central entrance is reached via three semi-circular stone steps and a flight of stone steps. The original ledged and battened oak door is set within a four-centred arched head and hood mould with label stops. Flanking the entrance are two three-light metal casement windows, also with hood moulds and label stops. A further three-light ovolo mullion window is located at the left end. The single-storey left extension has a plank door to its entrance, set within a moulded wood doorframe and stop-chamfered wood lintel. To the right of the door is a three-light metal casement window with a wood lintel, along with wrought-iron casement fasteners and springs. The interior features four-centred arched stone fireplaces, inglenook fireplaces, and an early stud partition on the ground floor.
