Description
The Oxford Canal Tilting Bridge, located approximately 600 metres north of Duke's Cut, is a late 18th century structure designed by James Brindley. This tilting canal bridge features a wooden deck supported by brick walls with stone details. The flat wooden bridge is equipped with long raking counterweight beams. The embankment walls, which widen as they approach the bridge, are topped with brick copings that slope away from the bridge. Beneath the bridge, large rusticated stone blocks are set into the brickwork to serve as fenders. This type of bridge is unique to the Oxford Canal.
