Description
The Ben Jonson Public House is a public house dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with wooden lintels and features a thatched roof with both rubble and brick stacks. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with subsidiary ranges and rear extensions, and stands two storeys tall plus attics.
The main range has a three-window front, with the entrance located in a 20th-century porch between the second and third bays. There is an additional ground-floor window, likely replacing a doorway, between the first and second bays. All windows are 2-light small-pane casements, except for a 3-light casement on the left side of the ground floor. A sundial, dated 1742, is positioned over the porch on a moulded ledge. The roof features stacks at both gables with rubble bases, as well as a brick stack aligned with the entrance.
To the left, there is a thatched single-storey hovel range that includes an inserted garage entrance. The rear of the main range has a rounded stair projection, a thatched single-storey wing, and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension. The interior has not been inspected.
