Description

This is a row of four brick cottages, originally six, dating from the late 18th century. It has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The roof is raised and covered with modern tiles, with brick end and ridge stacks. The cottages have 2-unit and one-unit plans, arranged over two storeys. There are a total of ten windows across the facade. Four entrances have 20th-century doors with arched brick heads. The ground floor has eight 3-light wooden casement windows, also with arched brick heads, while the first floor has ten 2-light wooden casements. Most windows have lead cames, crown glass, and wrought-iron casement fasteners. 20th-century extensions have been added to the rear. The interiors feature chamfered beams and winder stairs. These cottages are known as Cope Cottages and are marked on Ordnance Survey maps as such. Local tradition associates them with Sir Anthony Cope of Hanwell.
