Description

Browns Clays Butchers, Lunn Poly, and No. 87 are a group of shops located on Banbury High Street, dating back to 1650. Originally built for Edward Vivers, a mercer, the building was restored in 1847. It features a combination of brick, ironstone, and stucco with a Welsh slate roof and a brick ridge stack. The structure has two storeys plus an attic and a three-window range. The High Street frontage includes three 20th-century shop fronts on the ground floor. Above, the first floor has three bow windows with ovolo moulded wood mullions and timber framing in between. The attic features three gable front full dormers with three-light windows. The jettied attic storey is adorned with a carved wooden frieze with pendants, some of which have been renewed, and ornamental bargeboards with finials. The roughcast exterior includes pargetting in heart shapes and fleurs-de-lys. On the left end, there is a brick ground floor leading to a 20th-century shop front, while the first floor has three classical-style pedimented wooden windows on brackets and a single gabled dormer with a casement window to the left. A sundial is also present on the front. Inside, the ground floor features stop-chamfered moulded beams, and the first floor contains two 17th-century stone fireplaces, one with moulded jambs and flanking pilasters, along with a renewed straight flight stair and a butt-purlin roof.
