Description

The gate lodge and entrance screen to Middleton Park were built in 1805, with the lodge designed by Blore and the screen possibly by Thomas Cundy, who made alterations to the mansion between 1806 and 1807. The structure is made of coursed squared limestone and ashlar, topped with a Welsh-slate roof. It has a two-shaped plan and is a single storey high.

The lodge features two wings, each adorned with simplified pilasters that support shallow triangular pediments, enclosing a flat-roofed loggia with Doric columns that protect the double-leaf panelled entrance door. The ends of the wings have 6-pane sash windows, and there is a similar wing at the rear of the left wing.

The entrance screen consists of four large, heavily-rusticated ashlar piers that support 19th-century cast-iron gates, with the outer pair topped by ornamental urns featuring leopard handles. The flanking walls are made of rubble and curve outward to plain ashlar piers. The interior has not been inspected.
