Description

Moor Lodge and the attached screen wall were built between 1770 and 1780, possibly designed by Bell of Durham. The lodge is constructed of ashlar stone, while the wall is made of squared stone, and both feature a Welsh slate roof. The building is in the Gothick style and consists of one storey with three symmetrical bays. It has a chamfered plinth, and the slightly projecting center includes a flush-panelled door with intersecting glazing bars in the fanlight, all set within a moulded pointed arch. Above this, there is a pedimented gable adorned with a Percy crescent and embattled cresting. The flanking bays contain 12-pane sash windows, with the upper sections featuring intersecting glazing bars and trefoiled corner panes, all under hoodmoulds with block stops carved with crescents. The parapet is decorated with blank quatrefoils, and the hipped roof has a corniced stack on the left side.

The right return of the lodge has four irregular bays, with a left-of-centre projecting bay that features paired 8-pane sashes and embattled cresting, flanked by blind pointed windows, and a 12-pane sash to the right. The similar Gothick sashes, hoodmoulds, and parapet continue the design.

The screen wall to the left curves back and decreases in height, topped with slightly-arched coping. Information regarding the date and possible architect was provided by Dr. Shrimpton, the Estate Archivist.
