Description
This summerhouse, located approximately 40 meters north of Orchard Lea House, is likely from the early 19th century but could possibly date back to the 18th century. It is constructed from brick and limestone rubble, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof, and features a rectangular plan in the Gothick style. The symmetrical brick front has three tall openings beneath a continuous stone band; the central door and the flanking 12-pane sash windows all have ogee heads formed within the top rail. The sides and rear of the structure are made of rubble, with a large window at the rear. The roof has a longer slope at the back. Orchard Lea House was purchased around 1760 by John McClary, the chief gardener at Rousham Park, who may have built the summerhouse under the influence of William Kent.
