Description

Cross Tree Cottage and the adjoining house are located on Islip High Street and date from the late 17th century, with an earlier cellar. The buildings have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from coursed limestone rubble and feature some wooden lintels, topped with a concrete plain-tile roof and brick stacks. The structure has a three-unit plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys plus an attic high.

The front elevation has three windows and two entrances, one of which is an older doorway with a heavy frame and flat arch. There are also two former doorways, one of which has been replaced with a window. The central section of the building is likely a rebuild from the 18th or early 19th century. The roof includes stacks at both gables and one to the right of centre.

At the rear of the left bay, known as Cross Tree Cottage, there is a gabled stair projection that is partly encased in the rear wing. Inside Cross Tree Cottage, there are chamfered beams and a butt-purlin roof, with a spiral staircase extending from the cellar to the attic. The cellar leads to a late-medieval stone-vaulted section beneath the rear wing, which features a tunnel. The interior of the adjoining house has not been inspected. A shop to the right is not of special architectural interest. The buildings are included for their group value.
