Description

Kings Head House and Laneside House are a former inn, now two houses, likely dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. They were remodelled around 1700 and have undergone 20th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with some rendered timber framing. The roofs are covered in Stonesfield slate and artificial stone slate, with rebuilt brick stacks. The houses are arranged in an L-shape.

The front façade was partly rebuilt. A large chamfered lintel, or bressumer, is located to the right of centre and is now built into the wall, but retains moulded wooden corbels at each end. Rubble walling above, and possibly to the right, may replace original timber framing. Most of the openings on the left-hand side have been altered, with renewed leaded cross windows. A heavy, chamfered doorframe survives. The right gable wall has been rebuilt. The rear elevation has rendered timber framing at first floor level and incorporates an old cross window. The rear range, which is part of Kings Head House, has renewed casements and one original cross window. Both ranges have large ridge stacks.

Inside the main range, the central bay, possibly originally a carriage entry, features heavy chamfered joists and a cellar. There's a large open fireplace with a chamfered cambered bressumer and chamfered stone jambs, a chamber fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a moulded-brick reredos, and a butt-purlin roof. The interior of Kings Head House was not inspected.
