Description

39/41 East Street is a house that dates from the mid to late 16th century, with some parts possibly being older. It has been altered and partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The building is constructed from part-coursed limestone rubble and features renewed wooden lintels. It has a concrete plain-tile roof with a rubble ridge stack. The house has a three-unit plan and is one storey plus an attic, although it has been altered to appear as two storeys.

The front of the house is irregular with four windows, featuring renewed two-light casements. The entrance and garage doors are located in the third and fourth bays, where the wall slightly projects forward. The upper part of the wall is a later addition, and there are several signs of early alterations and rebuilding. The right gable wall is battered near the front corner, and the rear wall shows remnants of a curved stair projection. The steep-pitched roof is raised at the front and has a large rubble stack to the right of the first bay.

Inside, the rain room has stop-chamfered joists that span onto heavy intersecting stop-chamfered beads and perimeter beams, creating five sections around a massive chimney breast, which features an open fireplace beneath a stop-chamfered bressumer. In the garage, there is a stop-chamfered beam with mortices for joists that have soffit tenons with splayed abutments. A depressed-arched chamber fireplace has a chamfer that runs around the jambs and bressumer. The walls are very thick and battered internally. The masonry courses continue through to No. 37 (Lilac Cottage) on the left, which is not included in this listing but may have originally been part of the house.
