Description
The Limes is a house located on East Street in Fritwell, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with later additions from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with wooden lintels and features artificial stone-slate roofs, along with stone-and-brick stacks. The building has a 2-unit plan that has been enlarged to 3 units, standing 2 storeys plus an attic. The front of the earlier range has three windows and features renewed 16-pane sash windows, along with a blocked central door and a small blocked first-floor window on the extreme left. The steep-pitched roof includes two gabled roof dormers and stone-based gable stacks. The added bay to the left has contemporary 2-light casements and the main entrance, which features a heavy plank door. The shallow-pitched roof of this bay has a brick stack to the left. The right gable wall of the main range has a pair of narrow windows, with similar blocked openings above. At the rear, there is a tall central stair projection with a leaded casement in the gable. Inside, the house features an open fireplace, a spiral stair leading to the attics, some re-used 17th-century panelling, and a butt-purlin roof.
