Description
A group of four headstones, dating from around 1657, 1693, 1696, and the early 19th century, is located approximately 7, 8, 9, and 11 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Steeple Aston. The headstones are made of limestone and marlstone.
The first headstone is a small limestone piece with a cambered head and a raised surround featuring a crenellated design, inscribed with "1657/KB." The second is a plain early 19th-century marlstone headstone that has a worn inscription. The third headstone, in Baroque style, has a scrolled pedimented head above a long rectangular panel, adorned with vigorously-carved flower drops, and commemorates Elinor Forrest, who died in 1696. The fourth headstone is a small marlstone piece with a shaped head and a recessed inscription panel; its inscription is largely illegible but includes the date 1693/4. The second headstone is noted as not having special architectural interest.
