Description

Thomas House is a row of five houses built in the mid-19th century and located on a raised terrace set back from the Oxford Road in Banbury. The houses are stucco-fronted with slate roofs and brick end and ridge stacks. They are two storeys high, presenting a 15-window range overall. Number 41 features a pedimented porch with a panelled door, overlight, and panelled reveals. A two-storey projecting extension to the left has sashes with horns on the upper floor and sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor, flanked by pilasters. Number 43 has a Tuscan doorcase with a renewed door, panelled reveals, overlight, and canted bay windows with horns on the ground floor; the first floor has sashes with horns and stepped voussoirs, with flanking pilasters. Number 45 has a central entrance with a stone surround, a four-panelled door with an overlight, sashes with glazing bars, and stone surrounds on the ground floor. The first floor has three similar windows, and a gable-fronted dormer with a stone-cased sash. Number 49 has a stone porch, a four-panelled door with an overlight and panelled reveals, flanked by sashes with glazing bars and stone surrounds. The upper floors have similar windows; two pilasters extend through both floors on the right-hand side. Sashes throughout feature 12 panes. The interiors were not inspected. The group value of the building lies in its cohesive design and contribution to the streetscape.
