Description
Folly Cottage and Jeffcoates are a pair of houses located in Hempton, dating from the early and later 17th century, with some later alterations. They are constructed of stone rubble and feature plain tile roofs with gabled ends and brick gable-end stacks. The houses are arranged in a two-room plan with central entrances. Folly Cottage, on the left, was built in the early 17th century, while Jeffcoates was added later in the same century. There is evidence of a connection between the two houses, with stairs leading from the right-hand ground floor room of Folly Cottage to the cellar beneath the left room of Jeffcoates.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic, featuring two three-window ranges. The ground floor has 20th-century three-light casements, while the first floor has 20th-century two-light casements. There are also two 20th-century gabled dormers and 20th-century plank doors. Folly Cottage has a 20th-century open porch and an oven projecting on the left. The rear of the houses includes 20th-century windows and dormers, and Jeffcoates has a 20th-century conservatory.
Inside Folly Cottage, the left room features a large chamfered axial beam with hollow-step stops, chamfered joists with similar stops, and a large stone fireplace with chamfered stone jambs, a large timber lintel, and an oven. The right-hand room has a rough cross-beam and unchamfered joists, along with a 20th-century staircase. The feet of straight principal rafters are visible in the chambers. In Jeffcoates, the right-hand room has a chamfered axial beam with cyma stops and a large stone fireplace with a cambered chamfered lintel, also with cyma stops and the remains of an oven. The left room features a chamfered axial beam with step stops. A wide central passage has a roughly chamfered axial beam, and the joinery includes a winder stair and some 17th- to 18th-century plank doors. The left chamber has a chamfered axial beam with step stops, and the cellar beneath the left end has old joists and a curved wall at the gable end where the stairs led to Folly Cottage. The roof structure was replaced in the 20th century.
