Description
The Mill is a watermill and millhouse dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, likely incorporating earlier elements. It was altered and converted in the 20th century. The building is constructed from limestone rubble with some ashlar dressings and coursed squared marlstone. It features roofs made of Stonesfield slate and Welsh slate, with rebuilt brick stacks. The structure is a single range with a rear extension, standing three storeys plus an attic.
The front of the main range has six windows, with a symmetrical three-window arrangement and a central doorway on the right. To the left, there is a larger section with two bays that have aligned windows flanking a six-panel door. The extreme left bay has unaligned windows on the first and second floors, along with a rubble arch over the tail race. The windows have ashlar flat arches above renewed sashes, with 16-pane windows on the ground and first floors, and 12-pane windows on the second floor. A lower marlstone bay to the right has renewed casements. The rear of the building is irregular, featuring renewed casements and 20th-century roof dormers, partly obscured by a large 19th-century marlstone rear wing roofed with Welsh slate, which also covers the rear slopes of the main roof.
Inside, there are large inglenook fireplaces and a softwood floor structure. Substantial portions of the drive mechanism remain, but only the shaft of the waterwheel is present.
