Description
Paine’s Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th and early 18th century, with alterations and partial rebuilding in the 20th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with wooden lintels and has a thatched roof with brick stacks. The building follows a three-unit plan, representing two distinct construction phases. It has two storeys plus an attic. The left half of the front elevation likely represents the earlier build and features 2-light casement windows at each floor, originally beneath stop-chamfered lintels, though these are partially obscured by a stone-slated outshut containing an entrance. The right half of the front was partly rebuilt after a fire, but retains large canted bay windows dating from around 1800, which flank the entrance. The interior has not been inspected. A large thatched extension to the left, incorporating two garage doors, and a range to the right, known as "The Wing," are 20th-century additions and are not of architectural significance. The building is included on the list for its group value.
