Description

Park View Cottage comprises two houses, likely originating as a single dwelling in the early 17th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries and a 20th-century extension to the rear of The Cottage. The construction is limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. The roofs are thatched on The Cottage and tiled on Park View Cottage, with rubble and blue-brick stacks.

The building presents a 3-unit plan for The Cottage and a single-unit plan for Park View Cottage. The front elevation features a segmental-arched entrance leading to a through alleyway. To the left of the alleyway, The Cottage has a 3-window facade with 2-light stone-mullioned windows on both floors, which are probably renewed. To the right of the alleyway, the smaller section (Park View Cottage) has a single window on each floor, both with chamfered surrounds but lacking mullions, and a doorway on the extreme right. The Cottage's roof is thatched with rubble stacks on either side; Park View Cottage’s roof is tiled and has a brick stack to the left.

Inside The Cottage, a distinctive feature is a very wide fireplace bressumer with ogee chamfer stops and run-out stops above a reduced open fireplace, with old inglenooks in the blocking. A section of the first-floor structure retains a substantial spine beam and joists, all displaying ogee stops. The building likely originated as a 4-unit house with a through passage, where the smaller cottage served as an unheated service bay.
