Description
The Bay and The Old Almhouse are a pair of cottages dating from the 17th century, situated in Shenington with Alkerston Kinwell. They are constructed of squared coursed ironstone and feature a steeply pitched thatched roof with brick end and ridge stacks. The left-hand cottage is a single-unit dwelling, while The Bay is a two-unit plan, combining to form a three-unit arrangement overall.
The cottage on the left has an entrance on its right side, featuring a plank door with a moulded wooden surround. A two-light wooden casement window to the left is topped with a wooden lintel. The Bay has an approximately central entrance with a plank door and wooden lintel, and a canted bay window on the right with wooden casement windows. A circular projection containing a slated bread oven is positioned on the left side. The attic space contains two three-light wooden casement windows set within moulded wooden frames.
Inside, the roof displays stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, alongside principals and common rafters. The interior also includes an inglenook fireplace with a bread oven and an 18th or 19th-century surround, and a straight-flight staircase.
