Description

The Church of St Michael is a 14th-century church that was restored by G. E. Street between 1856 and 1858. During this restoration, a north aisle was added, and the chancel arch was widened. The church is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features 20th-century tile roofs. It comprises a chancel, nave, north aisle, vestry, west tower, and south porch, with a four-window range. The chancel includes a three-light Reticulated east window, 19th-century lancets on the north side, and a two-light Reticulated window on the south. There is a restored priest's door on the south. The nave features a two-light lancet and a three-light window with intersecting tracery, along with two two-light Perpendicular clerestory windows. The south porch is gabled and has a 19th-century door. The west tower has multiple stages with a crenellated parapet, string courses, and a louvred opening to the bell-turret, along with stone-coped gables. Inside, there are 19th-century fixtures and fittings, 19th-century roofs, and a three-bay north arcade from the same period. A 12th-century tub-shaped font and 18th-century wall memorials to the Turner family, as well as Francis James and Nathaniel Bacon, who died in 1739 and 1740 respectively, and William Chaplin who died in 1776, can also be found. The west window contains 19th-century glass.
