Description

Bacon's Farmhouse and the attached stable is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with a front range added in the 18th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features steeply pitched red-tile roofs, with brick stacks at the ends. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The central entrance is highlighted by a front with a hipped red-tile roof, featuring a panelled and glazed door within a moulded wood frame. The ground floor has sash windows with keyblock lintels and glazing bars, and there are four similar windows on the first floor, which also has a stone band. The earlier range at the rear includes two gabled dormers. The attached stable, located to the right, is also built of squared coursed limestone and has a steeply pitched slate roof. It is a single storey plus a loft, with two stable entrances that have plank doors and wood lintels, as well as a gabled loft entrance with a plank door and wood lintel. The stable features a hipped roof on the right side. The property is historically significant as it was once the Manor House or Court House, named after its 18th-century owners. In the first half of the 18th century, the Duke of Buckingham, who was the Lord of the Manor, demolished much of the old house and constructed the current farm buildings. The property was purchased by Merton College, Oxford, in 1853 and 1858. The interior has not been inspected.
