Description
Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It has origins from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 18th century and 19th century. The early 18th-century front facing the road features squared, coursed ironstone that approaches ashlar, topped with a slate roof. The gables are stone-coped with moulded kneelers, and there are ironstone quoins. The building has stone ridge stacks with stone bases and renewed shafts.
The farmhouse has an irregular plan, with the 18th-century block on the main road and an earlier range that was altered in the 19th century, extending to the rear along the lane. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The elevation facing the road includes three sashes in moulded wood frames on both the ground and first floors, with the entrance front located at an angle. This entrance, on the right, features a six-panelled door with glazed panels and a moulded stone architrave surround with a cornice. To the left of the entrance, there is a 12-pane sash in a moulded wood frame with a stone lintel, and above, two similar sashes on the first floor have keyblock surrounds.
On the return side up the lane, the building is also two storeys high with a five-window range. The ground floor has sashes with stone flat arches, two-light casements, and 20th-century windows, while the first floor has similar windows. Inside, the rear section has a stop-chamfered beam and a stud partition. The early 18th-century range on the roadside includes a panelled room, a marble fireplace, and an 18th-century staircase. One window is said to be dated 1722.
