Description
Merton Garth is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It was built in 1610 and altered in 1710 for Exeter College, Oxford. The building features coursed limestone rubble on the 17th-century section to the right and colourwashed Flemish bond brick on the early 18th-century extension to the left. There is a brick stack at the left end and a stone ridge stack on the right. The structure has a two-unit lobby-entry plan that has been extended to a double-depth plan, with two storeys and an attic, and a three-window range.
The projecting 17th-century gable end on the right has timber lintels over mid-18th-century nine-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars, flanked by a blocked early 18th-century window on the ground floor. A 20th-century door is located to the left of the gable end. The roof features a gabled dormer, and there is an 18th-century outshut at the rear.
Inside, the 17th-century section has stone-flag floors, stop-chamfered spine beams, and a ribbed door leading to a quarter-turn staircase with winders at the rear of the stack, along with an open fireplace that has a stop-chamfered bressumer at the front. The early 18th-century extension includes a fine dog-leg staircase with turned balusters set on a closed string, and a fine room from around 1730 to the left, which features a moulded cornice, fielded panelling, doors, and a bolection-moulded overmantel. The first-floor room has similar dado panelling, a moulded cornice, and doors.
