Description

The Church of St Edmund and George is a church dating from the mid-12th century, which was restored by the architect G.E. Street in 1859. A north aisle was added during this restoration. The building is constructed from squared coursed limestone and limestone rubble, featuring steeply pitched 20th-century tile roofs with stone-coped gables. The church comprises a chancel, nave, north and south aisles, and a south porch.

The chancel includes a restored three-light geometrical east window and a restored two-light Perpendicular window on the south side. The south aisle features a restored 12th-century doorway and a restored window with a round arched head, along with set back buttresses. The north aisle has a two-light reticulated window and two 19th-century lancet windows, as well as a diagonal buttress. The nave has clerestory windows on both the north and south sides, each consisting of three two-light lancets with trefoiled heads and hood moulds. The south aisle contains two-light Perpendicular windows with squared heads, including one to the right of the porch that has a hood mould and label stop. There are pilasters and diagonal buttresses, along with a 19th-century gabled porch and a south doorway with an arched head and a plank door.

At the west end, there is a bell-turret designed by Street, featuring open timber sides and a wood shingle roof. Inside, the church has decorated piscinas in the chancel and south aisle, a 19th-century three-bay nave arcade on both the north and south sides, and 19th-century roofs and fittings. There is also a tub-shaped font that may date back to the 12th century.
