Description
Coursehorn is a cloth hall, dating from the 16th century, that is now a boarding house for Dulwich College Preparatory School. It was substantially re-clad and altered in the mid-18th century. The building is timber framed and has a red and blue brick chequer pattern to the ground floor and tile hanging to the first floor. The roof is tiled and hipped, with a large end stack to the right and a stack on a wing to the rear. There are two gabled dormers. The building is two storeys high with attics, and has a regular four-window front with glazing bar sash windows featuring open boxes. The entrance has a panelled door within an architrave surround, topped with a flat hood on curved brackets. A single 16th-century moulded doorway is present on the ground floor. The interior reveals heavy timber framing, with heavy ribbed and moulded ceiling beams on the first floor. A large fireplace is located at the east end of the hall, featuring a wide Tudor arched opening with decorated spandrels set within a shallow Tudor arched recess. A decorated bressummer is present in the fireplace of a rear room, and is likely to have been brought in. A queen post, side purlin roof is now partially hidden. Window shutters are still complete. The building is now attached to 20th-century single-storey school buildings to the rear on the right.
