Description

The Old Cloth Hall is a timber-framed building, originally a cloth hall, dating back to the 15th century. It was floored in the 16th century and a subsidiary wing was added in the 17th century, with some 18th-century cladding applied at a later date. An early 20th-century restoration and extension occurred. The building is timber-framed, with the ground floor clad in red brick, featuring close studding and curved braces on the first floor. The north side is tile-hung, and the roofs are plain tiled. A tall brick stack is located on the rear ridge of the left-hand wing, and a further stack is set off-ridge to the front on the right. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with the earlier wing on the left. It is two storeys and attics high, with irregular window placement: three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor of the left wing, and four windows on both floors of the projecting wing to the right. A projecting stair bay with a short catslide roof is on the left wing. A wide, shallow, square bay with a small pentice roof is at the end of the left-hand wing. A two-storey, hipped-roofed porch sits in the angle with the right wing. The entrance is Tudor-arched, with a moulded wooden surround and a boarded, ribbed door. The interior retains substantial timber framing with jowled posts. The roof is possibly of a crown post type, with some of the collars removed. A large kitchen fireplace features a very wide, chamfered bressummer.
