Description
Primrose Hill is a house built in 1802 for Francis Ayerst, with significant extensions made in the mid-20th century. The exterior is rendered, featuring part tile-hung rear wings and plain tiled roofs. The building stands two storeys high on a plinth, with a plat band and a paired modillion eaves cornice beneath a hipped roof, which has stacks on both the left and right sides.
The front has a regular arrangement of three glazing bar sash windows on the first floor and two tripartite glazing bar sash windows on the ground floor, both with recessed segmental heads. A central panelled door is topped by a traceried rectangular fanlight and is set within an Ionic columned porch, accessed by a flight of five moulded steps. The house has recessed wings on either side that reflect the main elevation's motifs, along with recessed hips and hipped rear wings, which are later additions. The Ayerst family has owned the nearby Slip Mill since the 16th century and developed this and other adjacent properties in the early 19th century.
