Description

Holmans is a house dating back to the 15th century, with alterations around 1600. The original structure was a hall house, extended and ceiled over in the 16th century. It is timber-framed and mostly clad with weather-boarding and tile hanging, with a red brick return elevation. The roof is tiled. The house has a brick base and stacks at the end on the left, and clustered centrally to the right; the roof ridge steps down slightly to the right. There are five wooden casements on the first floor, with 4, 4, 2, 3, and 2 lights respectively, and three on the ground floor with 3, 4 and 3 lights. A half-glazed door is centrally located on the right side. A two-storey rear wing was added around 1600 and extended in the early 20th century.

Inside, the main range has a late crown post roof with straight, unmoulded posts and ogee bracing, incorporating reused moulded timbers, not blackened and characteristic of the 16th century. The rear wing has reused, soot-blackened rafters, and the lower roof of the main range likely retains remains of an earlier roof. A stack occupies a smoke bay with soot-blackened lathe and plaster partitions. The frame is built of large scantling with jowled posts and knee-braced tie beams, and includes chamfered beams. A very large inglenook with a double flue is present, along with a large fireplace in the ground floor room on the left end, featuring a four-centred arched head with deeply incised spandrels and crude head carvings. The house is named after the Holman family.
