Description

Slip Mill House is an 18th-century mill and mill house located on Slip Mill Road, Hawkhurst. The building is timber framed with weatherboard cladding above a painted brick ground floor. It has plain tiled roofs and a hipped roof with stacks positioned to the left and right. The two-storey front features two tripartite sash windows on the first floor, and bays with windows on the ground floor, with a central boarded door set within moulded pilastered surrounds. Hipped ranges extend to the rear.

To the left, a projecting two-storey and attic former mill building has two gabled dormers. The first floor has two glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor features segmentally-headed casements with half-doors, and a central glazed fanlight. A gabled rear range is also present.

Remains of a decahedral water wheel and its associated wheel-pit, along with some machinery, are still visible. The mill operated from at least the late 16th century to the 19th century, run by the Ayerst family, who were also connected to Holmans and Primrose Hill nearby. Late 20th-century glazing bar sash windows have been incorporated into the front elevation.
