Description
Whitelimes Barn is a Grade II listed house that was originally built as a barn in the late 16th century. It has been extended on three sides and reroofed in the 18th century, with restoration taking place in the late 20th century. The structure is timber framed and weather-boarded, resting on a sandstone base, and features a plain tiled roof. The main roof is hipped, with a secondary pitch for the aisle outshot, a central hipped midstrey, and catslide outshots on both sides. The present entry front, which is the rear elevation of the barn, has a single pitch roof and no aisle. Late 20th-century casements have been inserted throughout, along with a glazed midstrey and boarded doors. Inside, the barn consists of five bays, including a former cow byre and cart shed outshots. The main frame features jowled posts and chamfered wall plate beams with run-out stops, along with curved braces to the tie beams and wall posts. A 20th-century scientific King-post roof has been added above the tie beams, replacing the 18th-century collar beam with through purlins.
