Description
Lower Maypole Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made around 1635 and again in the 1930s. It features a timber frame with tile hanging on a red brick base, partly in English Bond, and has some exposed imitation framing with plaster infill. The roof is plain tiled and the house originally had a two-cell lobby entry. It stands two storeys high with a garret and has a half-hipped roof with a moulded stack cluster positioned off centre to the left.
On the first floor, there are three-light, single, and slightly leaded wooden casements, while the ground floor has a three-light and a five-light mullioned and transomed window, which is dated 1778. There is a boarded door located off-centre to the left. The exposed frame on the lower left is from the mid-20th century. Additional casement windows can be found on the return and rear elevations, along with a cat-slide outshot at the back.
Inside, the right-hand bay features a moulded and brattished dais with beams at both ends. The upper floor has two tie beams, one of which is interrupted by the stack, suggesting it may be the stump of a crown post. There is a further framed bay at the end right, indicated by lost framing. The staircase is a newel type located in the cat-slide, and there is a bresummer fireplace dated 1635. A mullioned and transomed window is signed in several places with 'Lambert' and '78', indicating that Lambert was a recorded glazier in the 18th century.
