Description

TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY (south side) 15/130 2 Woodgate headstones about 3m south of the south transept of the Church of All Saints GV II

Pair of headstones. Late C17. Freestone. Pair of identical, shouldered, round-headed low headstones. Plain borders, the inscriptions cut in capital letters, the words overrunning the lines. The northern headstone commemorates Stephen Woodgate, died 1673. The southern is probably of similar date and commemorates another member of the Woodgate family.

An example of a pair of early headstones in an outstanding churchyard.
