Description
This listing describes a pair of headstones located about 3 meters south of the south transept of the Church of All Saints in Brenchley. Dating from the late 17th century, these headstones are made of freestone and are identical in design, featuring shouldered, round-headed shapes. They have plain borders, and the inscriptions are carved in capital letters, with the text overflowing the lines. The northern headstone commemorates Stephen Woodgate, who died in 1673, while the southern headstone likely commemorates another member of the Woodgate family, also from around the same period. These headstones are notable examples of early memorials situated in an exceptional churchyard.
