Description
The Wimshurst memorials are located immediately east of the north transept of the Church of All Saints in Brenchley. The memorials consist of a headstone with two bodystones and a double headstone, all enclosed by iron railings. The single headstone, dating from the early 19th century, is made of freestone and features a segmental head with scrolled shoulders. The head is intricately carved with the eye of God surrounded by descending rays, and festoons are carved to the left and right. The inscription is depicted in relief on an open book, with a swag of cloth below, commemorating Adam Wimshurst, who died in 1835, and his wife.
To the east are two bodystones, while the double headstone to the north is in the Gothic Revival style, featuring two pointed arches at the top, each with a cusped border. Engaged shafts with stiff-leaf capitals in the 13th-century style flank the inscriptions, which commemorate Thomas Wimshurst, who died in 1875, and Frederick Wimshurst, who died in 1871. In front of the double headstone, to the east, is a plain stone slab. The low cast iron railings surrounding the memorials are designed in a Gothic style, featuring panels with cinquefoil heads and gabled verticals decorated with crockets. These memorials represent a notable pair within an outstanding churchyard.
