Description

Broad Cloth, The Old Studio, and Little Cottage is a cloth hall of Wealden type, now converted into three cottages. It dates from the late 15th century, with flooring added in the 16th century and alterations and extensions made in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed on red brick plinths, with exposed timber and plaster infilling, and close-studded framing under the left gable, featuring curved braces on the right. The roof is plain tiled and hipped to the right, with a gabled return wing to the left. The left side has moulded bargeboards, and there is a tall brick stack behind the ridge on the right, along with a hipped dormer to the right of centre. The left-hand gable jetties out over the ground floor, supported by a moulded wooden bressummer and brackets. The eaves in the centre overhang on braces. The rightmost first-floor bay also jetties out over the ground floor on joists and brackets. The building has two storeys and attics, with a single window in the left gable. The first floor has an irregular arrangement of four windows, while the ground floor has three windows, all of which are casements. The windows on the first and attic floors under the gable feature 19th-century transom and mullion cross casements, while the other windows are 19th and 20th-century wooden casements. There is a moulded round-headed doorway to the right under the left-hand jetty, which has a boarded and ribbed door. A central carriage entrance is located to the left of the right-hand window, with another boarded door.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Little Cottage (formerly Studio Cottage) was used as a Nonconformist Chapel. In the later 19th century, notable residents included Thomas Webster RA and F D Morely RA.
