Description

Pympe Manor is a house dating from around 1500, originally built as a Wealden hall-house. It was extended at the rear in the 18th century and underwent restoration and further extension in the 1920s. The building is timber-framed, featuring close-studding with plaster infilling. The first floor overhangs on a bressumer, with the ends of the floor joists protruding. The end bays are lower than the central section, which has massive curved braces at its angles. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with a later 16th-century stepped brick chimneystack.

The house consists of three bays in the hall with one-bay wings, and it has two storeys with four windows. Most of the windows are 20th-century mullion windows with leaded lights, and there is one hipped dormer. A corner post features a dragon beam, and there is a four-centred arched doorway with an original plank door. The rear of the house includes an 18th-century extension and a 20th-century L-wing.

Inside, the manor retains three arched service doorways and an inserted roll-moulded spine beam with run-out stops. The ground floor room on the right side has a late 16th-century four-centred arched stone fireplace. There is a moulded octagonal crown post with four head braces, and the principal chamber features an arched brace roof. Traces of cambed pargetting in a scrolled pattern can also be seen.
