Description
Gibbon's Place is a house dating from around 1500, originally a hall-house, with a return wing added in the mid-16th century. The building was relocated to Ightham from Benenden in 1935-36. The south side features a red brick plinth and is timber-framed with close-studding and plaster infilling. It has a plain tiled roof with brick stacks at the left-hand end and an off-ridge stack at the front right. The mid-16th century return-gabled projection on the right is jettied on exposed joists and supported by moulded brackets beneath the first and attic floors, and it has moulded 16th-century barge-boards. The house has two storeys with an attic only in the gable, and the fenestration is irregular, featuring three casements on the first floor and two on the ground floor. There is a boarded and ribbed door with a Tudor-arched surround in the original screens-passage position to the right. The gable has two oriels, with the one under the first-floor jetty being particularly deep.
On the east side, the building is also timber-framed with close-studding and plaster infilling, and it has two storeys with two windows on the first floor and one window on the ground floor, all casements. The north side has a gable to the left with a boarded door in a Tudor-arched surround below, and a garage wing to the right with a kitchen yard behind.
Inside, there is a 16th-century fireplace with a moulded bressumer in the drawing room, as well as remains of a moulded and crenellated dais beam in the 20th-century stairwell, along with a crown-post on a moulded arched tie-beam. The dining room features another 16th-century fireplace with a chamfered bressumer.
