Description

Rectory Cottage is a house, originally a rectory, dating from the early to mid-15th century, with alterations in the mid-16th century and later, and restored around 1969. The house is timber-framed with brick and rendered infilling. The right-hand hall bay is faced with buff and purple brick in English bond, while the gable ends are brick. It has a plain tile roof. The building follows a Wealden design, with hall bays of unequal length, and a two-storeyed left-end bay. The storeyed right-end bay is missing. A stone plinth is visible on the left-end bay, which has C20 studding and herringbone brick infilling. There are two tension braces on the first floor of the left hall bay. The left-end bay is jettied to the front and features arch braces springing from a brick flying wall-plate, with a solid bracket under the central tie-beam. A steeply-pitched hipped roof covers the structure, with a gable-end stack on the right. The fenestration is irregular, with three two-light casements. There are doors to the left end of the hall, with a half-glazed door behind. A C20 brick rear wing extends to the right. Internally, the framing is exposed, and there is a replaced tie-beam with a moulded octagonal crown-post. A fragment of a large ovolo-moulded arch-brace remains near the base of the principal post. There are two hollow-chamfered, almost pointed-arched service doorways to the left end of the hall. A mid-to-late 16th-century inserted hall floor is present, with moulded beams and joists.
