Description
The Little Gem Public House is a building that originally served as a house with a cottage on the left, now functioning as offices and a public house. The structure dates from the 15th century on the right side and the 17th century on the left, with 18th and 19th century elevations. It features a timber-framed and rendered exterior, some of which is incised, and has a plain tiled roof that steps down to the left in the center.
On the right side, there is a two-storey gabled dormer with casement windows and an off-ridge end stack. The central section includes a hipped projecting cross-wing with a large gable on the right, adorned with 19th century barge-boards, a pendant, and a finial, which occupies most of the depth of the cross-wing. A smaller gable with similar 19th century features is located in the left-hand re-entrant angle of the cross-wing. The left side of the building has two storeys, while the cross-wing also has two storeys, and the right side is one storey with attics.
The first floor on the left features one glazing bar sash window, with a tripartite glazing bar sash window below it. In the re-entrant angle of the cross-wing, there is another glazing bar sash window on the first floor, with a casement window below. The end of the cross-wing has a two-storey octagonal bay topped with a steep octagonally-hipped roof. The ground floor of the right-hand block has a 20th century bowed shop front, a half-glazed door to the left of the canted bay on the cross-wing, and a 20th century boarded door to the right of the right-hand bow window. Inside, substantial timber framing is visible.
