Description

This is a former malthouse, later converted into a stable and oast house, dating to the mid-18th century with a kiln added in the early 20th century. The original malthouse, which forms the stowage, is constructed of English bond brickwork with a hipped tiled roof. The building is two storeys and attics, spanning four bays. The north-east side retains a gabled lucarne and brick gable, remnants of an earlier extension on the north side, which was removed when the kiln was built. The north-west front features window openings with wooden architraves. The south-east end has a 19th-century plank door set above a plinth, with a circular cat entrance built into the base to deter vermin. The roof comprises through purlins with inserted collar beams, but retains its original rafters. The floor beams at two levels are chamfered with run-out stops. An early 20th-century circular kiln, constructed in English Garden Wall bond brickwork, is attached to the north-east side. The hop drying floor remains intact, although the roof was missing at the time of survey. This is a relatively rare survival of an 18th-century malthouse in the area.
