Description
The Almshouses, Nos 1-4, are a row of almshouses built in 1806 by John Carter. They are constructed from coursed galletted rubble stone with ashlar dressings on an ashlar plinth. The building features a moulded cornice beneath a slate hipped roof, which has two ridge stacks. The central pair of houses projects slightly and is accented with dressed quoins. The structure is one storey high and includes four pairs of lancet casements, separated by three lean-to projections that are doubled in the center. There are four boarded doors facing each other on the sides of these entrance projections. It appears that these projections were added later, re-using drip-moulds from the windows they covered. A crest on the central projection bears the inscription: BENEVOLENTIA HELENAE BETENSO MDCCCVI.
