Description
This is a pair of houses, numbers 16 and 17, located on the north side of Vale Square in Ramsgate. They were built in the 1840s as part of J.C. Eddel’s development of the square. The houses are constructed with pebble-dashed and rendered walls, topped with a slate roof. They exhibit Greek Revival detailing.
The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and feature a central projection and a hipped roof covering a double span, with a central chimney stack. The front elevation is four bays wide. The left and right bays of each floor have narrow, multi-pane sash windows. The second floor has paired wooden casement windows, while the first and ground floors have French windows. The first floor French windows are topped with pediments, and the ground floor French windows have balconies supported by brackets with anthemion enrichment. Large multi-pane sash windows are found in the basement on both sides.
Entry is provided via return elevations, which are three bays wide, with the outer two bays blank and central sash windows. Number 17 has a panelled door, while number 16 has a half-glazed door, both recessed within columned porches, which are topped with rectangular fanlights.
