Description
A pair of houses built in the 1840s, with later 19th-century alterations, located on the south side of Vale Square, Ramsgate. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with pebble dashing to number 46, a rendered base, and slate roof. They extend over three storeys and a basement. Both have a horizontally rusticated base and four giant Ionic pilasters rising to a cornice parapet. A central stack is present.
Number 45 (the right-hand house) features a sash window on the third floor and a two-storey-and-basement bay. Cornices mark each storey, with balustrading above. It includes Venetian windows on the ground and first floors, with panelling below, and a large sash window to the basement. A two-storey extension is attached to the right, with a three-storey section behind. Number 46 (the left-hand house) has a single sash window on the second and first floors, and a three-storey bow, again with cornices at each storey, and a sash window to the basement.
Number 45 has a half-glazed door with Art Nouveau glazing and detailing, a rectangular fanlight in a moulded surround, and a flight of seven moulded steps with cast iron panelled rails. Number 46 also has a half-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight on the ground floor, accompanied by steps and simple iron rails. The houses form part of J.C. Eddel’s development of Vale Square.
