Description

The brewery buildings, now functioning as a depository, date from the mid-19th century. They are constructed of stock brick with a slate roof and include maltings and oasts. The main range is two storeys high with a loft, featuring a corbelled cornice. A large weatherboarded hoist housing with a barge-boarded gable is supported by long brackets. On the first floor, there are three segmentally headed windows, while the ground floor has three segmentally headed windows with iron grills and two horizontally sliding sashes, along with a central wooden casement and a boarded door to the right, which is accessed by an external wooden staircase. The left return displays a pedimented gable with a blank roundel and three blank window recesses on each floor. At the right end, there is a projecting cross wing with two square plain oasts, each featuring two segmentally headed openings high on each elevation and a brick dentil eaves cornice. The left return elevation has large 20th-century vehicle doors. The rear elevation shows irregular segmentally headed openings. The interior structure is reported to be unaltered. Originally known as the Cannon Brewery, it was acquired by Tomson and Wootton in 1876 and was still operational as a brewery in 1918.
